DENGUE FEVER IS BACK!

Dengue 5 years ago and today... a rising problem

Like degenerative diseases such as heart disease and cancer, dengue has been taking part in the chart of inflicting mankind. This threat has slowly spread to other regions of the globe due to global warming and urbanization that create more breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes.

Recently, there has been a sudden increase rate of dengue fever in Malaysia and people are worried how to prevent and resolve this problem.

As of 2010 dengue fever is believed to infect 50 to 100 million people worldwide a year with 1/2 million life-threatening infections. It has dramatically increased in frequency between 1960 and 2010 by 30 fold. This increase is believed to be due to a combination of urbanization, population growth, increased international travel, and global warming. The geographical distribution is around the equator with 70% of the total 2.5 billion people living in endemic areas from Asia and the Pacific.

Ready, Set, Spray! Brazil Battles Dengue Ahead Of The World Cup

"This year, dengue transmission has been much more significant in Sao Paulo than in other years," says Nancy Marcal Bastos de Souza, a biologist who works with the city authorities. "We spray neighborhoods where we have a confirmed case of someone contracting dengue so we know there are dengue-carrying mosquitoes there," she says...

Infections are most commonly acquired in the urban environment.[6] In recent decades, the expansion of villages, towns and cities in endemic areas, and the increased mobility of people has increased the number of epidemics and circulating viruses. Dengue fever, which was once confined to Southeast Asia, has now spread to Southern China, countries in the Pacific Ocean and America,[6] and might pose a threat to Europe.

So my question is, what should we do to cope with such rising problems, especially for people who live in the region that has high risk of Dengue/Breakbone Fever infection?
